Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a First Grade teacher, who teaches very eager students in the Bronx. The majority of my students not only come from low income households but also from Spanish speaking households. In my First Grade class, I have a very important goal.... TO GET ALL MY STUDENTS TO READ!!!! However, how can I teach my students to read when some are having difficulty with the basics such as identifying letters or recognizing sight words? That is why I am asking for your help. My students need to develop their phonemic awareness and be able to read basic sight words. Phonemic awareness is the awareness of the sounds that make up spoken words. What better way to focus on these skills than with games and "fun" activities. Not only are these games fun to "play", but the students also have the opportunity to learn. They can work alone or with a partner. Through "play", they are able to practice without the fear of making a mistake. These games will allow my students to understand that letters can be used to form words, able to identify basic sight words and able to associate letters with their sounds. I know that my students will benefit greatly from your donation. They will be able to reinforce those skills that they may be having difficulty with in a nonthreatening way. Again I thank you for considering my proposal.
