Reading to Learn

My students need a variety of language arts materials, including a set of reading and writing centers, fiction and nonfiction comprehension centers and a set of magnetic teaching charts.

Reading is at the heart of it all. I teach third grade in a rural school. The students who attend this school come from low-income families who struggle with reading.

The major obstacle facing my students is that they know how to read but they do not know how to read to learn. They need the opportunity to practice reading and applying comprehension strategies that would foster learning. The problem is, I do not have the necessary material to offer my students with reading material that is challenging and fun to read.

The resources, I need in order to teach my students to read-to-learn, are take-it-to-your-seat activities that would encourage independent, partner and small group reading. These are items are: the reading and writing instant learning center, read for comprehension listening center, and comprehension concepts learning centers are essential to reading to learn because they allow students to monitor their own reading success. These resources encourage students to read and to use key comprehension strategies that would foster reading mastery.

Please help my students become life-long learners. Your generous contribution would benefit my students by allowing them to read authentic print-fiction and non-fiction.
