Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a high-need community in Bronx, NY, my students often lack supplies that I consider mandatory for a quality education. In our school’s case, we are lacking equipment for Physical Education. Although our school is equipped with a gymnasium, we are lacking a Physical Education teacher; therefore, I take on the role of the “gym teacher.” When my class enters the gym to exercise with another class, they enter a gym filled with old, deflated basketballs, some scooters, and some old jump ropes. Instead, I would like my students to enter the gym with equipment ready to use. They always ask to play such wonderful gym games and I always have to answer, “I’m sorry, but we don’t have the equipment we would need to play that game.”
Acquiring this equipment would help the teachers in my school to educate students about maintaining healthy exercise routines. As I’m sure you are aware, the United States is facing a childhood obesity epidemic. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), in 2007, 25% of children from New York were considered obese. In the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of children considered obese. Our way of fighting back against this epidemic is by teaching healthy eating habits and by teaching exercise routines and games in school. The equipment funded through this proposal will go to great use in educating our students about the importance of maintaining a lifelong, healthy lifestyle.
For that reason, I’m requesting 6 volleyballs, 20 basketballs, 12 uncoated foam balls, 12 nylon jump ropes, 10 indoor soccer balls, a J.U.M.P. Join Us Moving Please CD, a Feel the Beat Music CD, and colored pinnies so that they students can compete against one another on teams. The equipment will be shared amongst other classes in the school who use the gymnasium. At the time, our school has over 900 students in grades Pre-K through 5. Consequently, the equipment will certainly go to wonderful use by our students! On behalf of the students at my school, thank you for considering our school for your donation.
