Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Beautiful color is in the world around us, especially in the award-winning books we have on our wish list. My kindergarten children are part of our school's Pre-K - 8th grade population. The school is an inner-city facility which reflects the city's racial diversity. My little ones face challenges such as poverty, single parent homes, parents not having high school diplomas, caregivers not speaking English as the primary home language and limited health care. Many of the children have social-emotional and/or behavioral concerns. Though our school is making gains, many of our students are not meeting state academic standards. My children have numerous risk factors to overcome in order to meet educational goals.

To this end, as I introduce the colors and recognition of the color words, my little ones need to be able to become visually connected with the objects in the world around them. Since my students love listening to stories, teaching color recognition and color word identification would be a natural gain via the color story books requested.

Educational books may mot be plentiful in my students' lives. Thus, my project's collection of color awareness books will be able to provide the children with an opportunity to look at full color photos and to learn to appreciate the colorful beauty in the world around them. These books will make it seem as if you can almost taste the sweet purple grape jelly depicted! The books will be used in a whole group setting as well as within small, guided reading groups. Learning is fun and with the variety of books chosen, the children will begin to appreciate the colors in the world around them. They will be able to group familiar foods and objects based on color. Recipes within the books will enhance the reading experience so that learning the colors and to read the color words can be a tasty experience!

The best part of this project is that the children will be exposed to literacy standards while thinking that they are merely listening to a story/looking at pictures. With your generosity, you have the power to strengthen my students' reading skills, in particular, color and color word recognition. You will make it possible for my kindergarten children to see that the world is a rainbow.
