Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 6th grade English in an inner-city classroom in CO. The boys in my learning family (homeroom) are great kids, however, they don't love to read. We are settling into a good routine where they read on Mondays and Wednesdays, solve brainteasers, puzzles and math problems on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and then play a sport on Friday.

My boys are mostly English Language Learners, and I want to hook them on reading. On a whole, they are reading right now on a 2nd grade reading level and I'm working on building my classroom library to include materials that are engaging and fun. Discovering materials that are engaging and on their level will help improve their reading levels immensely! My boys love playing sports and like discovering new things about the world, however we don't have access to magazines and sports literature that they would love.

To solve this problem and hook my boys on reading, I want to order Time for Kids magazine for them. This great resource keeps them up on current events, is engaging and always has great photos. I've also requested some great sports books - both fiction and nonfiction, scary stories and Tupac poetry. When I told my boys that I've created this proposal and showed them the list of books, they got really excited and asked me, "When are they coming?!" These great resources will also be used in my literacy classes to excite the students in those classes about reading.
