Listen And Learn~ Building Literacy Through Listening

My students need MP3 players to listen to stories at their individual level, selected just for them based on their interests and needs.

My students are excited about literacy. They are just learning how to read and love every minute they spend with a book. I teach first grade in an area that has been highly impacted by the current world situation. We are located on an Army base and many of the children have one or more parents deployed at this time. Reading provides a welcome escape for many of the children. Even though we are on an Army base we are a high-need community.

One way to help children become better readers is to provide an opportunity for children to listen to stories. We do not have a listening center in our classroom. My students love to read and they especially love to listen to reading.

Providing a listening center will have so many benefits. The students will be able to be exposed to multiple genres, listen to modeled reading and fluency, all while developing listening skills. Providing individual mp3 players for the listening center allows me to meet each students individual needs. Each student can listen to a book that is at their individual level and meets their unique interests and needs.

Your donation will help foster my students love of reading in my students. You will make it possible for my students to listen to books at their level which will truly impact their literacy development. By supporting this project, you will help a first grader become a life-long reader. We are not just learning to read, we are learning to LOVE reading! Reading is the foundation on which future academic success is built. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your consideration.
