Students need to get their hands dirty to be inspired by the art of North America. I teach Art to Kindergarten through Fifth grade in rural school in Western North Carolina, and I believe these students need to be inspired!

Students do not always get to experience how art is made first hand. We study the art of North America, and most of this type of art is carved sculpture. In art, students rarely get to try techniques, like carving, like the artists we learn about use. There is not enough funding for projects like carving. Tools and supplies are expensive, but the experience of carving would be so rich!

My students need carving foam, carving tools, and sandpaper. Fourth and Fifth grade students will use these tools to create original art. Fourth grade students will learn about the art of Native American artists and experience what it would be like to make a totem pole as a class. Fifth grade students will try their hand at carving like an Inuit artist, by carving an animal. These lessons will begin with a discussion of the history of these cultures, followed by planning and carving their very own sculpture. The lesson will conclude with a writing assignment where the students will reflect on what it might be like to be an Inuit or Native American artist. Without these resources, these students may never have this kind of experience. The knowledge they will gain through the hands on experience of Native American and Inuit art will be a lasting part of their memory.

You will make it possible for my students to sculpt their way to finding success, in themselves, and in the skills they will acquire through the carving process. It will be an experience they will not soon forget!
