Angles Of The World

My students need 200 protractors to learn about the various types of angles that make up our environment.

I am an Arts Teacher in a culturally diverse Title 1 public school where almost 90% of students receive one or more free or reduced cost meals and the families have a median income of less than $30,000 per year. We have over 750 students mostly from single-parent families often where English is a second language. 14% of the students are Special Education, equally split between Least and Most Restrictive.

Eight years ago we introduced a major arts integration program that transformed this “School in Need of Improvement” into a mentor "School for the Arts". Along the way, reading and math scores improved dramatically. We are now the showcase school for our district in Arts Integration. The programs we built and the Teacher Education we incorporated has resulted in programs that are sustainable at minimal cost and can be easily replicated. One of our programs, “Beginning Architecture” has begun the infusion of this career path into the everyday curriculum. A joint venture of the Arts and Math programs, our first two projects were so successful that we decided we needed to expose our younger grades to a foundation that would give them a new building block to foster learning and that would channel their interests in this career direction.

This year we’d like to introduce the hands-on program, “Angles of the World”, by having students in 6 classes (including Special Education) learn the mathematical concept of angles as it applies to their physical environment. Students will learn how to use a protractor and independently measure various structural angles in and around their homes and the school. They will become fluent in geometric and mathematical terminology and have direct exposure to a practical utilization of a math skill. They will also make use of drawings, model-building and other art forms to emulate what they discover in math and use it in their artwork.

Most of the supply items we need are already in place, but we need 200 student protractors to successfully initiate the program. Please help us continue our successful integration of the arts into the everyday curriculum.
