Empowering Parents with Literacy Backpacks

My students and parents need literacy-building backpacks to encourage at-home reading—with irresistible books and hands-on activities.

I want to empower parents with materials they can use to help their child become a better reader. I have taught second grade for 11 years. Every year, I see the same situation. Parents want to help their children with at home reading but they are unsure how to do it in the most affective way.

Parents are unsure of what types of text to use and what activities they can do to build on the text. In some cases, parents do not have any age appropriate books to read with their child.

Here is a solution I would like to provide for the parents in my classroom. I would like to provide literacy-building backpacks with irresistible books and hands-on activities for parents and students to share! Each pack features a paperback book with easy-reading text and skill-building hands-on activities. The books and activities target the following standards: reading comprehension, written responses to text, analyzing text, reading a variety of genres, and relating to literature.

I want all parents to feel successful when helping their child. This project would allow me to provide them with the materials to do so. The only way children become better readers is through exposure to reading. I am committed to do my part to help each child become a better reader at school. This project would form a bridge that would educate parents on how they too could help their child become a better reader.
