This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Bring Ancient Egypt to life for curious 6th Graders in a high-poverty neighborhood in New York.

Imagine being 11 years old again. You walk into your social studies classroom and the lights are dimmed. The white board is glowing with images of mummies and pyramids, boats made of papyrus reeds sailing down the Nile River. Mesmerized, you take your seat, inspired to learn more about this ancient civilization. I teach at a charter school for the arts, where students' imaginations are stretched in every subject. My class runs on an inclusion model where special education students sit alongside general education students, and all students have the chance to grow socially because of this interaction. As their teacher, it is a challenge to design lessons that will intrigue such a diverse student body without the use of technology. Many of my students are strong visual learners, but they cannot benefit from video and digital presentations because our school has a very limited budget for technology.

With an LCD projector, I could share educational videos, documentaries, and interactive multi-platform presentations with the class. These are forms of information that are accessible and invaluable to students who are performing on all levels. If I had a projector, I would establish a web conferencing partnership with English speaking students in Egypt who can share their experiences with my American students. Historical experts, archaeologists, and museum guides from around the world could be virtual guests in our classroom with the click of a button through the use of Skype.

With your generosity, this class of students will have the exciting opportunity to delve deep into ancient worlds and build a strong foundation for understanding history that will last the rest of their lives.
