Chocolate Unites Children

My students need 100 copies of "The Chocolate Touch" to read and then take home to keep in a personal library. We also need to have the teacher guide to help supplement the learning in which the students will be engaged.

Do you still have that favorite book you read in grade school? Has it been well loved by signs of tattered pages, your name written in the front cover and along the outside pages? It was your beloved that has moved with you from place to place as you have grown older. I teach in a building that is 86% poverty. I am the teacher-librarian who is collaborating with a 3rd grade classroom teacher on this endeavor. We are always trying to unite students with books. We want to create an experience where a book has become a valuable commodity in their life. No matter how often they move or how old they are our students will start their love of school and reading through this opportunity at school.

The students in our building come to school with many obstacles that need to be overcome each day. Our students can not depend on a meal outside of school, caring parental supervision, or the adult feeding of their intellectual cravings when they are not at school. We are trying to create a belonging and interest in reading through these materials. The topic of chocolate is one that our students understand and desire.

With the collaboration of the third grade teachers we would like to create an opportunity to have all the third graders read one book at the same time, and be able to keep the book as their own. Students and staff would create an atmosphere of collegiality and togetherness. Through the use of book discussions and social interactions, students and staff will explore the values expressed in the novel and how it pertains to their lives.

The main reason we are requesting these materials is so that the children are going to be able to take home a book that is truly theirs. This is a great opportunity for you to share in making that book and experience be something special for our third graders. It is not just the now, but the future attitudes towards reading and learning that we want you to be a part of for the students in our building.
