Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

You helped us with “Hunker Down,” Buying us books; I was confident shelving would Come with few looks. Garage sales I scoured; Searched all summer long. But the shelving I saw was too rickety, Not strong. Friends and family I asked For donations but, alas, No people had giveaways, Even for my class. So I appeal once more To your generosity and grit For shelves for our Reading Lounge: Will you please help fund it? My school is in a high poverty area in a major Illinois city. Our students come from all over the world—Mexico, Laos, Vietnam, Bosnia, Burma, Somalia, Liberia, Kenya, Guatemala, and Iraq are a few of their countries. Learning English and reading in the new language can be daunting. We have gathered hundreds of books to create a school Reading Lounge —- a comfortable place with pillows, soft furniture, and café tables for relaxed reading. Currently, our book bins are haphazardly spread out on the floor, using up precious lounging space! Please help us obtain shelves to better organize our new room.
