I teach sixth grade inclusion math in a low wealth district. Our middle school serves a population of almost a thousand.

Students who get off to a great start in middle school math are those who have mastered their basic multiplication tables. If they are still counting on their fingers, concepts such as factorization, fractions, and other building blocks of higher mathematics are elusive. In the past, writing and reciting the times tables and doing drills helped many students. This approach doesn't work for everybody, especially those with learning disabilities or little to no home support. Modern technology is changing the way people learn. My students are having and HAVE had difficulty learning their facts though they truly have the desire to master them. I need a way to tap into their style of learning and give them a format that will encourage them to practice more.

Free interactive games on the Internet are great for filling this need with younger students. But the middle schooler needs something that will appeal to the adolescent and that will not make him/her feel like he/she is doing "baby work". The game Timez Attack by BigBrainz fulfills this need. With the game comes a license for the entire school to use the game for a year. We have time in the school day schedule and our computer labs would be full at those times with students across the grade levels working to master this all important skill.

I could bemoan the fact that so many students come to middle school without knowing their facts, but that is wasted energy. The fact is, students in some areas are NOT learning these and traditional methods of helping them aren't working. I ask for your help in giving these kids the opportunity to finally get that foundation that will enable them to move ahead in math. I need a new tool and I believe this particular product will fit the bill. But I cannot do it without help from you. This is a contribution that would have a very measurable effect. We already have a baseline for the facts the students have mastered. I am confident that periodic retesting would show vast improvement if the students could use this activity. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the consideration you are giving us.
