My mother kept ever iota of praise that I have ever received. She bought a photo album when I was a youngster and she proudly placed every certificate, ribbon, picture, and she even kept receipts, in special places to remind me of my possibilities. My mom made sure that no praise went unnoticed, especially when it dealt with my education. It was just the mere fact that she took time out of her single parent life to show me how proud she was of me. Even if my achievement was only becoming a crossing guard in sixth grade. Her pride in me made me feel like I had just received the coveted Nobel Peace Prize. I want so dearly to share this feeling and need to achieve with 35 of the greatest inner-city students ever. I am a departmental teacher and I am responsible for sixth and seventh grade Literature and Social Studies classes, and my heart goes out to my students who never seem to win an award or reward.

Now it seems that many students' personal achievements go unnoticed or ignored. Children receive certificates of achievement, perfect attendance, honor roll, and merit awards that seem to vaporize with the passing of time. I would love to celebrate with my students daily! I am in need of rewards and incentives appropriate for middle school students. Basic school supplies, drawing utensils, extra time in the computer lab, and other useful items would truly be appreciated. I want to be able to acknowledge my students for even the simplest of progress with incentives that would encourage them to continue the good work.

I want my students to feel as I did when my mother placed my first check in a picture frame over our makeshift fireplace. I want them to want to place their awards in a special place as well in order to remind them that he/she can do it. We all are blessed with special gifts and talents and praise and pride only inspires us to do better, step a little higher, smile a little broader, and pull the shoulders back in pride.

Perhaps a photo album, a special pencil, or a simple glue stick could be the tool needed to create the next great leader.
