Hi! I am a second grade teacher with class of great students who love school and love to learn. If you could meet my terrific kids you would love them too. They are very bright and creative and fun.

Unfortunately we have a few problems. Many of my kids are very young for second grade. Sitting is hard for them. Sometimes we have a lack of self control. I have had a problem with students getting along on the playground and co-operating in class. To help with this problem I have started a program called "Fun Friday". Each Monday every student gets a strip with the numbers 1 to 30 representing 30 minutes. Every time someone has a playground problem or doesn't finish their work etc., I ask for a certain number of minutes from their number line. The severity of the problem determines how many minutes they lose. On Friday during the last half hour students get to choose a fun activity or game to play that would not be available to them during the week. If they have not lost any minutes they get to choose for the full 30 min. For each minute lost they must stay seated for that amount of time, joining in only after they paid their lost time.

This program has helped my classroom atmosphere to improve so much. Students are highly motivated to make right choices. I have a chance to talk with misbehaving students and encourage them to try to not loose any minutes the next week. The consequences are immediate when they lose a minute and yet I am able to sympathize with them for losing minutes and tell them I know they can do better. Rules are posted and they know in advance that if they break the rule it will cost them minutes. So far no one has lost more than 15 minutes because it makes them reflect on their behavior every time they lose a minute.

I need new materials to make Fun Friday something every student will look forward to. I have a large number of boys in my class. I know that they would love K'Nex building materials and they will be learning while having fun. I want my students to love school and still be able to develop self control and respect for others.
