I teach in a high-performing school with a very high population of special needs students and students from low-income families. I primarily teach classes with low-performing children who are emotionally disturbed. Despite difficulties, they are incredibly caring and sympathetic towards others. They greatly enjoy helping their families and communities.

My students have shown a particular interest in US troops in Iraq. Many students have begun discussions on their opinions of the war, family members that are abroad, and disruptions to their daily lives. They wonder what it must be like to be away from family for so long and how soldiers cope. Students have a profound sense of patriotism and appreciation and would enjoy being able to show it.

In order to show gratitude, students would like to prepare packages to send oversees. Each student in the 6th grade would create a stocking to stuff with goodies for the holidays. This will turn into a letter writing lesson in which students will draft a letter of gratitude. In order to do this, we will need materials such as felt and yarn to create stockings. Students will not only learn letter writing skills, they will learn appreciation, expression through writing, and current events. Each teacher has agreed to incorporate the war in Iraq into their lessons for two days, then create stockings and letters on the fourth day. Once stockings and letters are prepared, they will be sent to a group that is stuffing them with food, daily necessities, and small gifts, then sent overseas.

My students are ready and willing to make a difference. They have a brilliant idea, and executing this idea would bring empowerment, appreciation, gratitude, and goodwill into the lives of 12 year old children. To be so giving at 12 only tells me there is a generation of beautiful young people emerging. Let them grow through this service to our men and women in Iraq.
