I am a science/technology cluster teacher that has over 300 students grades K-5. Our school is in a neighborhood with many families from other countries. Most of our students qualify for the free lunch program.

Since so many of our students are English Language Learners they rely on their environment for clues. I rely on visual aids whenever I can. Unfortunely, many of the images I want to use are unavailable. Some because they are specific to our school and others because they just don't exist.

With a digital camera & memory stick, I would be able to capture (and save) the images I need. Since the images would be real the students would be able to make "real-world" connections between themselves and their environment as well as between themselves and others.

With the use of pictures from their environment, the children will be able to relate images to words and increase their own vocabulary. Students would see actual examples of items they know as well as others they have never seen. The digital camera would also allow me to take pictures of my students as they are exploring which could be used in their writing and to help them connect images of their experiences with words.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
