Multicultural Books For Us!

My students need a collection of multicultural books, including a set of big books and titles such as "Africa Is Not a Country" and "I Love My Hair".

I am a kindergarten teacher in a high-need community, 79% of the children in my class receive free lunch. There are twenty-five children in my classroom and only a handful has basic literacy knowledge necessary for the kindergarten curriculum and South Carolina State Standards. My students began kindergarten unprepared and need a huge boost to prepare them for the prosperous future. Eighty-five percent of the children in my classroom have no one to read to them outside of the classroom on a regular basis; because of this my students lack interest in reading or looking at books independently.

This project is geared toward helping, my five year old students, to become excited about reading independently by putting high quality multicultural literature in their hands. My goal is that by providing students with books where they see themselves in the illustrations and situations they will find value and enjoyment in reading. These books would not only help the students develop success in reading and therefore a love of reading but also engage them in exploring who they are as African American Children who are valued and loved.

For this project I am requesting the purchase of 21 pictures books and 1 set of big books. These books represent situations that my students find themselves in such as: parents in prison, living with extended family members, learning to love their skin color, learning to love their hair, living in poverty, and learning to love the cultural heritage from which they come from. These books will be put directly in the hands of each child daily. Students spend fifteen minutes a day exploring self selected books. The children are given a tote bag to keep their favorite books for a week; students are allowed to explore and reread these books as often as possible. Kindergarten is the time for students to build a love of reading so that they will become life long readers and develop into successful members of society. Please help us purchase these books so that we can learn about our culture and love to read.

This project will help 25 children who entered school with unprepared learns to love to read and explore their cultural heritage. By funding this project you make it possible for these children to no longer have books that represent cultures other than their own.
