Social Studies classroom with a desire to read fun, page turner novels that are related to the events of the world today.

My students have shown a desire to read historical fictions but as a beginning teacher I lack the classroom library to support their desires.

Global Studies lends itself to students being current on the events that occur in this world. A lack of information and knowledge is known about Afghanistan and the lifestyle that is lived there. The New York Times Best Seller, A Thousand Splendid Suns, hooks students into reading while providing a glimpse into the lives of those, especially women, in Afghanistan over the past 30 years! From Soviet occupation, rule of the Taliban, and the United States occupation this book provides an understanding of the turmoil in Afghanistan and is directly linked to several units covered in this course, such as the geography of the Middle East. Furthermore, it will help to develop a foundation of the world religion unit that students will encounter later in the year while engaging students in a page turning book.

A donation from you will make it possible for my students to be captivated by a well-written novel that educates readers about a culture that is foreign to most students and educate them about current events.
