Making Math Experiential

My students need math manipulatives, including a number balance, 4 bucket balance sets, algebra dominoes, color pens, sharpies and connecting cuisenaire rods.

How do kids who have been removed from regular schools for behavioral reasons learn math? The same way all kids learn math best, through hands-on problem-solving activities. That's why I'm trying to get materials to set up math learning centers for the middle school students I teach in my alternative school for students who have been long-term suspended from other county schools.

Our school district funding is based upon enrollment as of day 10 of the school year. However, because we only get students after they have been thrown out of regular schools, we typically have fewer than five students on day 10. Before the year is over, however, we serve between 70 and 100 students--with virtually a $0 supply budget.

My goal this year is to have my students spend a typical day in math class rotating through four types of activities: (1) a short period of whole group instruction, (2) traditional seat work, (3) partners learning centers where they will use math manipulatives to solve problems cooperatively with a partner and (4) computer stations where they will work with math games and "virtual manipulates." I am an experienced math teacher who is well-trained and well-practiced in inquiry-based hands-on instruction. In fact, I have co-authored over a dozen scholarly articles on this kind of teaching and learning. Once I have the material resources, I know I can keep these students busy learning math and developing more positive images of themselves as pro-social scholars and problem solvers.

My classroom serves students who have already failed in traditional settings. Some of these students go on to prison rather than high school, and they are all at huge risk for dropping out before high school graduation. Yet, for all my efforts to beat those odds, for lack of resources, they remain at high risk. Help me prevent them from falling through the cracks yet again.
