Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The Student Art Market is a brand new program born from a ceramics teacher’s desire to provide a meaningful fundraiser for the school’s art department. By collaborating with the director of the Farmer’s Market at a local city park and in cooperation with the Parks and Recreation Services of the city, this program allows students of all ages to feel the satisfaction of selling their artwork in the community, while helping the art program at their school. The students organize, pack, price and market artwork to sell at the Farmer’s Market every Sunday and then write about their experiences in order to present them to their classes. Any school in our district that has an art program can participate. The program was presented to all of the art teachers at the annual meeting of visual and performing arts teachers on August 13, 2008. The program produced an extremely positive response

The positive results of the Student Art Market (S.A.M.) are many and varied. First of all, and most importantly, students will be more involved and excited about school. Secondly, the art teachers are bringing their schools out into the community and involving the parents in school activities. Also, students are learning valuable lessons about art, marketing, sales, writing and presentation. The art programs, of which many are in jeopardy in many schools across the County, can prove their validity through community involvement, fundraising and increasing parental involvement in school-related activities. More art programs were cut this year than any other time in the last ten years in our district. We cannot lose one more art program due to ignorance or lack of funds. It has been proved time after time and documented in publications, such as Best Practices, that students with high infused art curriculum perform better on standardized testing such as the FCAT and become more successful in their future, adult lives.

The Student Art Market enhances student learning in a variety of ways. The students will understand that artwork is created with purpose and meaning. By thinking about selling their artwork while they are creating the piece, they will be forced to look at their artwork in a more critical manner and the craftsmanship in their work will improve. (I have witnessed this first-hand in my class in students who participated in the pottery sales I have had at the local Farmer’s Market in the last three years.) In addition to improving their critical thinking skills, they will also be predicting, by thinking of the future of their artwork and not just the here and now of creating it. Students will be introduced to real life math concepts in pricing their work and determining the percentage they will receive from the sale of their artwork after sixty percent of the proceeds will be returned to the art department budget from any sales. Their writing skills will improve after writing about the experience and sharing it with their classmates in a presentation. Outside of classroom skills, students will learn real life, practical skills, which will help them as businessmen and women of the future.

Your help with the Student Art Market will ensure that students continue to have a thorough art education. This program gives high and low achieving students the opportunity to express themselves and a chance to be excited about school.
