Putting the AP back into AP

My students need 15 copies of "Band of Brothers", by Stephen Ambrose.

Our school is in a high poverty area and serves the poorer areas of our city. I teach 11th grade US History, AP US History, and Sociology.

My AP class is in need of 15 copies of Band of Brothers because our school was in need of other materials and could not purchase these. These kids are the brightest in our school, and they are going to college. They will already have to struggle because of their economic situation. Forcing them to struggle because we could not give them a decent high school education is not justified.

This book will help the AP students understand and empathize with the individuals in WWII and at home. They will learn the American experience during the war and develop an understanding of what helped make America a world power. The books will provide a foundation of knowledge for our students so that we can promote higher order thinking.

By purchasing these books you are preparing college bound students in a high needs area for college. I have been teaching my kids the skills they need for college, but we could perform at a higher level with the right resources. Band of Brothers is a very factually based book with an added touch of imagination, and Stephen Ambrose is a leading historian in his field and will add to the students ability to become well rounded individuals.
