Reading Enhanced and Encouraged Classroom- Regular students who WANT to read! Who would have thought?

Just like the rest of the country, my students are faced with lower reading levels than they should have, and many who say they don't like to read. I say they just have not found what they like to read, and they need to be surrounded by opportunities to read with a variety of interesting choices right in front of them!

I am building a class library with books that will provide reading for a variety of ages and interests at the high school level. I am providing students with reading time in my class where they can find books they have an interest in. Even though I am providing them the opportunity with their choice of book, they are held accountable for reading it. They have to complete a certain amount of pages per semester, and write book reviews on their selections. We have created a bulletin board to post reviews, and are tracking pages read. My students are loving this! Furthermore, they are reading! However, I need help to really get it going and take it to the next level!

We all want our students to read the classics, but we have to "hook" their interest first and build up to appreciating those wonderful classics. I need help providing interesting and fun material for students to have right in front of them ready to read! The few selections I currently have do not stay on my shelf long- they get checked out, returned, and checked out again. My students are reading! I have hit up every friend and relative I have, and I spend money at every payday buying books for my kids... I know I am providing the right selections to interest these students, and their test scores, vocabulary, communications skills, and writing abilities will improve because of this in-class library. Please help me make a difference! Reading levels and SAT scores are down across the country. Our students are technology impaired. They need a good book and time to read it! I have time, can you help buy the book?
