My students need 1 CD of relaxing music, 5 sizes of weighted balls, 1 weighted blanket and a set of 12 yoga mats with video and poster.

Leading a healthy and physical lifestyle is very important to foster in today's youth. My students need to try harder than most of their typical peers to participate in structured physical activities like basketball, baseball, and exercise classes. Having autism can make these activities difficult because of all the details and social interactions that help make the activities successful. The 6th grade students in my class are all on the autistic spectrum in a self-contained class in a typical middle school which provides opportunities to interact with typical peers in a variety of situations.

The most common is during physical education and recess. This is the first year for my class in this school and my students are new to the building. They try to socially interact with peers but they have limited common-interests and abilities with the typical 6th graders. Many of my students also have many sensory needs that can interfere with social interactions. The typical students have many clubs to promote health and active lifestyles, but my students lack the prerequisites to participate in them at this time. One of the activities is Yoga. Yoga and meditation is a slowly paced exercise that can strengthen core muscles, increase focus, and help meet some of the sensory needs of my students. My students have begun to show more interest in this activity as the days go on. They can also use the meditating techniques to help calm themselves in overwhelming situations. Currently, we are using towels and water bottles as mats and weights. My goal is to help my students become more independent in the yoga sessions to join in with their typical peers for another opportunity of social interaction while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

In order to make this possible, my students need yoga equipment to continue to learn the proper way to complete the moves and techniques. The towels are quite slippery on the tiles-that is why yoga mats are vital for safety while becoming fit and "experts" in Yoga! While learning to calm ourselves with meditation, weights can help provide the appropriate proprioceptive input to help meet sensory needs.

Once my students learn to use the equipment with little to no prompts, they can then work on generalizing their skills with the typical peers. Once with the typical peers, they can focus on the social aspect. Your help will increase the importance of a healthy lifestyle in today's society for children with autism. While doing this, they will also increase their ability to interact with typical peers during an "In-Style" and cool Yoga session!
