I Am Mean Nasty and Downright Disgusting

My students need a set of health books, a Hygiene VHS tape, a Going To the Doctor Teaching Kit, a puppet stand and 5 puppets.

As the school nurse I concentrate my nutrition lessons to students in grades kindergarten to second grade. This year I would like to implement a new curriculum that would help my students have a better understanding of how germs are transmitted and reduce the incidents of influenza in the classroom. The school that I will teach at is at poverty level with our minority students being African American and Native American.

Due to the close proximity of our student in the classroom, we have a number of students absent from school due to colds and flu symptoms. Upon my research of this situation, I discovered that hygiene and germ transmission is not part of our student's regular curriculum. My teachers are willing to take the time out of their teaching schedule for me to present my "germ" curriculum. What is holding me back from starting these classes is the lack of supplies.

To teach this topic and make it innovative and fun for my students, I am requesting the following supplies: 1 VCR, puppets and educational books. Because these materials can be used year after year and to various classrooms, this project is very cost effective.

In the light of the warning of the possibility of a pandemic flue outbreak, I feel that my curriculum is not only timely but sorely needed. Any child I can teach using your funding will be a child that is healthier and learning in the classroom.
