Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fifth grade teacher at an inner-city school in Connecticut, where many of our students are new to our country and their family incomes are amongst the lowest in the country. Many of these children face poverty, violence and obscenities of life on a daily basis, that are well beyond what most of us could imagine. Yet our students do their best to learn. We try our best to give them a good education and an introduction to the American way of life, but with limited resources there are many things that others consider basic parts of education that we cannot provide without assistance. Our school's education assessment plan is aligned to the No Child Left Behind Legislation. We need to make great strides to meet the assessment goals set by the district, as well as the strict mandates from the government. To help meet the goals set before us, my students must raise their reading abilities. To do this, I would like to have my students generate ideas for writing by reading and discussing a variety of genres. Many of my students do not have any other books to read, except for the ones they get in school. Students will progress to conducting research for assigned or self-directed projects. Ultimately, they will publish their own original works. I would like to be able to laminate their final books and offer them a certificate of excellence for all their hard work. Most of my students are not fortunate enough to have a parent at home that can offer them assistance in their reading. They come from poor, impoverished families. Many of their parents do not have more than a high school education. Being able to have them share in the love of reading and in turn write their own story, can broaden their minds and help them to feel good about themselves and all their hard work. These feelings are essential in keeping them excited about staying in school and furthering their education.
