NHCS Pathways To A Community Garden

My students need 5 shovels, 5 trowels, and 2 tool sets to create, maintain, and harvest a community garden. They will also need a storage shed to store and secure the tools. All other materials are being provided in-kind through local businesses.

The pathways program is an alternative program that serves "at-risk" students who have been unsuccessful in a traditional school setting. The Pathways program pairs traditional classroom instruction with character building experiences that seeks to help the student become a more responsible and productive student and citizen.

As the Pathways Program an alternative placement for long-term suspended students from the entire county, we reach students of diverse socio-economic backgrounds who are often unsuccessful in traditional classroom settings and unable to see the connection between school and their future. Research and a wide variety of school/community gardening projects throughout the United States has shown that students who become actively engaged in the gardening process are able to link that work with making changes in their lives and communities.

Pathways seeks materials to create and maintain a community garden on-site. The students will gain knowledge and understanding of horticulture while learning the value of community and their place in it.

Most of the students who participate in the Pathways program have never and will likely ever have the experience of growing food with their own hands nor have they felt it in their power to contribute anything of substance to the communities they live in. Your donations will enable young people, many of whom already feel worthless, to recognize the value of honest work and their own self-worth.
