Help Us Chart our Standards Mastery!

My students need 3 packs of Polaroid film.

Chicago, IL Grades 9-12

I teach freshman and sophomore English at a new public school located in one of the most negatively stereotyped neighborhoods of Chicago. Yes, it is a tough neighborhood, but the resilience of my students and their quest for knowledge never ceases to amaze me. Our students face so much violence and poverty in their lives outside of school that I am blessed to have students who care so much about their education.

A large part of their quest depends on bettering themselves and their families. One way they can chart their success and motivate themselves to achieve the standards is through charting their standards mastery. In my class, every objective is based on a standard the prepares them for the ACT and for higher, critical thinking in college and beyond. In order for them to reach their goals after high school, they have to meet or exceed their goals as freshman and sophomores. Through GramMasters tracking, students are seeing the correlation between their studying and their success. It's part competition, part educational prowess, and part hard work, and I feel that my students should be rewarded.

I have set up an area in my classroom that is dedicated to showcasing the students' success in their standards tracking. If "Jasmine" receives an 80% in adverbs and adjectives, which raises her overall mastery average to 75%, she is now a "Silver Pen GramMaster." This means that she gets her name and picture on the board, under this section. This is motivational for other students as well as her, because she wants to keep her status. In the past, I have used Polaroid pictures, which the kids ADORE. They think they are really something special when they watch their picture come out of the camera, showcasing their success. However, Polaroid film has recently become relatively scarce and expensive, out of my teaching budget (read = out-of-pocket expenses). I would love it if I could continue the tradition of using Polaroid film to chart their standards mastery, and with your help, we could!

My students don't receive luxuries very often in their lives. Something as simple as your donation of 120 Polaroid pictures for my potential 120 ACT Masters would be a turning point in their educations, keeping them steered toward their ultimate success.
