Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 5th grade science at a 4th and 5th grade only, inner city elementary school in TX. We are low socio-economic and we are also very high in limited English proficient students.

We were lucky enough to have 7 desktop computers donated to our classroom however, none of them have speakers and we also have no printer for students to use for their projects. Many programs need the students to be able to hear the interactive aspects of the website or activity.

We need 7 sets of speakers, one for each desktop. We also need a printer that we can network to the student computers. When students are utilizing technology the bells and whistles are what drives motivation to keep them interested and provides them the opportunity to see real world science in action. The ability to actually hear the spoken words from the interactive websites helps the students with their language acquisition. The more they hear the better they learn.

Many of the students are second language learners and the ability to HEAR the speaking part of an activity and the graphics will increase their language acquisition as well as content understanding.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
