Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hola! I teach English Language Learners at an elementary school in a low income area. Our ELL students make up about 1/4 of our school's population. About 75% of our school's population receives free or reduced lunch. I work with third, fifth, and sixth grade. I personally think I work with the best kids in our school!

Have you ever crowded together on a rug with 14 other little bodies?! Well, I do, everyday! I use our floor space (a carpet remnant) everyday to read aloud our stories, guide my students through the writing process, discuss events in our life and most importantly for their language development, talk, talk, and talk. Luckily I work with wonderful children who are very kind to each other and don't mind the cramped space. In fact, they've gotten used to it. Our school doesn't have air conditioning, so we tend to spread out a little more at the beginning and end of the school year!

We spend a lot of time together on that rug and we would love a little more space. In fact, it would be wonderful to have a rug that is bilingual in Spanish to help us feel a little bit more connected with each other. My students love to teach me words in Spanish. I can just envision them having me repeat the words on the rug to them! It will benefit the students greatly. As I have said previously, we spend many of our minutes together learning and sharing. We just need a little more space so we don't feel so crowded.

Your help will ensure that my students have a clean, large area to share their thoughts while we are learning. In addition, you will make it possible for my students learning a new language to recognize something familiar every time they enter my classroom. I strive to show them everyday that their language is valuable and has a place in our learning and society. Your support will help emphasis this point.
