I teach 1st grade in a diversely populated school. My students speak English, Spanish and Somali. I work hard to identify and meet the needs of all our students.

My classroom is full of terrific students who are excited to learn how to read! I'm working to guide my students to be independent learners. With 16 boys and 9 girls in my room, I'm looking for strategies to engage all students. They had the idea to be able to read around the room, under tables, in the corners, on the carpet, at the tables, etc. Our problem is, our zip-lock bags can't hold all the books and supplies we need while we work in all corners of the room. It's important for us to find a place and stay there for the whole work time and not waste time by getting up for supplies.

All the items I've requested will help students stay organized and share their thoughts, ideas and comments with each other. Each student will have their own magazine file so they can keep all their books, writing and note taking materials with them as they settle in to work. The post-it notes are for students to write about their thinking, mark an important part of the story, or make a note about their question, comment or connection to what they read. We also need the storage boxes to organize and keep our leveled books accessible for students to select what they read.

With your help, my students will have the tools they need to become the independent learners they want to be. Some of my students have limited support at home. Some of them simply show up everyday because of the relationship I've built with them. I want to honor my students and try to make their idea happen while keeping it workable for me.
