Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an enthusiastic New York City middle school art teacher. My aspiring young artists are 11-14 year old kids coming from a diverse range of backgrounds and family units. In addition, MS 88 is a Title 1 school serving students who are economically in need.

One of the biggest challenges for an artist is learning how to draw the human figure. As middle school students are very absorbed in appearance, drawing people becomes one of the topics that are very eager to learn about while at the same time they are quick to get self conscience. Their sense of proportion and ability to draw people in different positions is very limited. Therefore, drawing the human body often becomes a very frustrating experience for budding artists.

However, I believe with the right practice and skill building students will start to breakdown misconceptions they have about the human body and gain confidence in themselves. I have requested materials that aid in visualizing the human body so that the students can easily see how the body is broken down. In addition, I have asked for materials that complement physically drawing the human body.

I urge you to help these bright, young minds conquer the fear of drawing the very thing that allows this world to be amazing: people! The students have the desire to learn now they only need the supplies. Please help me make this possible, my students will be grateful for a lifetime!
