Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Life science is exciting when you can see it live and up close. I teach first grade in a low socioeconomic area.

I was teaching a math lesson last week using paper frog manipulatives and one student commented that frogs are only green. That led me to think about how little my students get to view aquatic life up close. I know that most of my students have little money and so they don’t have aquariums at home to view the different species of frogs or fish that can come in many colors.

A classroom aquarium and tadpole kit will help me to introduce life science in a way that the children can observe. In my class we write everyday. With little experiences my students have little to write about. Having the opportunity to watch a tadpole turn into a frog they will have much to write about. They will help to take care of the aquarium and frogs as part of their classroom jobs which will help them develop responsibility for life. The benefits this aquarium and tadpole kit will bring to my class are quite extensive.
