My students need two copies of the following Van Allsburg titles: Jumanji The Mysteries of Harris Burdick The Stranger Zathura Two Bad Ants The Wreck of the Zephyr Widow's Broom Garden of Abdul Just a Dream Sweetest Fig Ben's Dream Polar Express We also need 20 writing journals to record information, a book center cart to hold their materials, and 4 copies of a Chris Van Allsburg biography for reference.

Our school community is comprised of a diverse group of talented students that come from a high-need urban area. I teach fourth grade students how to be literate, thoughtful, and problem solvers.

It is always my goal as a classroom teacher to enrich my students' learning environment. As part of that commitment, I am constantly looking for new materials to share with the students so they can have an environment that is rich with all kinds of literature. Unfortunately, due to cutbacks in the school budget there are not always funds available to purchase materials.

All of my students are familiar with the Polar Express. They aren't aware that Chris Van Allsburg has MANY other published books. I would like to give them a "ticket" to the "Learning Express" by sharing many of the other books Chris Van Allsburg has written or illustrated. His stories are so vibrant. I know the children will be eager to compare and contrast the different stories. They can also use the reading strategies that we discuss in class to infer and make connections. The students will need sets of the Van Allsburg books(enough copies for small groups), reading response journals, and a cart to keep the items in order to complete the project.

You can give each of my students a trip on the "Reading Railroad". You will make it possible for them to complete an all encompassing author study. These materials will take them down "learning track".
