An Author's First Steps

My students need a Draw and Write Chalk Table, giant stampers with ink pads and 4 Stamp, Draw and Write Story Centers.

Ms. G. Navy Point Elementary School
Pensacola, FL Grades PreK-2

An Authors First Steps An Authors First Steps is a project that I will use for my Pre-K ESE class. This project will also expand to the Kindergarten, First Grade, and K-2 ESE Classes. The Pre-K and K-2 classes are Special Education. This school is a Title One School with 90% of its students population receiving free or reduced lunch. Our school is also a school that has a significant number of ESOL students.

Due to budget cuts the school does not have any ESE or school budget money to give additional supplies for this project that would include Pre-K ESE, K-1 General Education, and K-2 ESE classes. *Please note that several ESOL students are included in K-1 General Education and K-2 ESE Classes. * Students in the lower primary grade levels often have difficulty in writing. When they are writing, the students often get their ideas and thoughts jumbled. Therefore, their writing is not in a sequential order. The writing sets would encourage students to write stories and substitute pictures for some of their words. After the students finish writing their stories, the teacher can encourage the students to stretch spell the words of the picture. In return, the teachers will be provided with a teachable moment that would encourage and engage students in revising and final drafting their writings.

The Draw and Write Chalk Table will be placed in my Pre-K ESE classroom. Due to my teaching philosophies, I believe that children learn through opportunities; hands on experiences; and engaging activities. The table will provide students with other methods of writing and illustrating. The Draw,Write, and Stamp sets; extra stamp ink pads; and additional stampers will be implemented for the Pre- K ESE, K-1 General Education, and K-2 ESE classes. These writing sets would be used to aide students in writing ideas. Most often when students are learning to write they are easily distracted or are off task. The writing prompt is not engaging and they do not understand the writing process because it is abstract. Students at the primary grade level have difficulty forming sentences. Their words and thoughts often get scrambled. Therefore, presenting students with a visual stimulus will give the students another method to keep their stories in sequence. The sets will stimulate creativity in students writing and encourage revising. This project will benefit students in the following Academic Areas: Writing, Reading, Language, Stretch and Inventive Spelling, and Grammar.

Your generosity in providing my students with the supplies needed for this project to succeed will be greatly appreciated. With these supplies I believe my students can reach beyond the stars with their creativity. Which in return would lead to their writing success now and in the future.
