Rhythmic children need rhythm instruments! I teach music in a Title I elementary school to kindergarten through fifth grade.

Fresh back from a wonderful summer training on using hand drums to teach integrated subjects through music, I was disappointed to find that our school system has significantly slashed our music supplies budget, making it impossible to purchase the set of drums I will need to put my training to practice with my students.

The hand drums we need will give my students hands-on opportunities to learn about and demonstrate musical concepts such as beat, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, note values, form, and timbre. The drums will help them develop listening and musical communication skills. As well as being used for music teaching, the drums will also be used to teach other subject areas through percussion activities. our school is an A+ Arts Integrated School, which means all teachers use the visual arts, dance, drama, and creative writing to teach their core curriculum. The drums would allow me to support my colleagues in such instruction as we put together activities that incorporate the hand drums to compose rhythmic chants about various topics the students learn about, to accompany multiplication tables, to illustrate with percussion different grammatical punctuation, or to explore the scientific properties of sound. With some creativity from the teachers and students there are really endless possibilities for using hand drums to teach, reinforce and demonstrate concepts. Most importantly such instruction has a great potential for reaching all learners, esp. those with musical, kinesthetic, and interpersonal styles.

By giving to this project you will be elevating the lives of the students in our school, many of whom are from poorer communities, and would not have opportunities in their home lives to play quality musical instruments and develop their innate capacities for percussion and rhythm. You will be supporting all of our teachers, as well as the music program, because all classes use music to approach various subjects. Your gift will give our students countless meaningful learning experiences through the wonderful world of percussion.
