Books Are Good For Reading, Too (You Know)

My students need 1 class set (23 books, to be shared among 3 classes) each of 2 different books: "The Egypt Game" and "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry".

I teach ELA to 6th graders in a high-poverty area in rural Mississippi. Our class goal is to read "Around the World in 180 Days"--because most of my 65 6th graders have never traveled past the edges of their small, rural town.

Two of my students read on-level: the rest are, on average, 2.16 years behind, and dislike reading. They dislike it because they've never had to do it before (they've only ever read short passages--never novels), and because it makes them nervous to do something they are not good at--reading, in front of other people. My allotted school funding to purchase classroom supplies is only $100.00, and I'm in need of alternate funding sources.

The one resource available to my students and provided by the school is on-level textbooks--which are all but unreadable to most of my students. I stumbled across a few copies of Bridge to Terabithia, which I substituted (impromptu) that same day during our lesson on setting. For the first time, most of my students were following along, and interested. Now, when I ask them to "paint mind pictures" (characters, setting, senses, inferences), they are able to get excited about it--they have characters and story lines to be invested in, and are able to see how their "Good Reader skills" are scaffolded throughout the text. For our upcoming non-fiction unit, I want them to have copies of "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry"--I chose that book because several of my students have asked to read it, and because the themes closely parallel some of their own lives. I've found that, even with short stories, it's the stories where my students can make text-to-self connections that they become invested enough to really want to practice their Good Reader skills. "The Egypt Game" will fit well in our novel unit.

Funding this project will make it possible for my students to have reading material that invests them, that gives them reason to believe reading can be relevant and purposeful. And, by extension, funding this project will go a LONG way towards helping my students pass their ELA end-of-year state exams.
