I want to empower students to become good citizens and excellent public speakers! I teach 7th and 8th Grade Technology Education. I teach in a high poverty, special needs area. I teach many special eduction students that are as excited as any of my students to create a news broadcast!

Last school year I started a news program for our middle school. Each 8th grade classroom created a broadcast each Friday. The students in the whole school LOVE it! The first thing the say when they come into the school on Friday is, "Are we going to see the news today?" Now my 8th graders this year are so excited! I am trying to find new materials to help the students create the best news cast they can. They do interviews with students, teachers and administration. They do sports cast, community cast and many more news features.

This year the students want to add music, videos and live interviews so I am asking for help to purchase another flip camcorder and two iPods. We already use flip cameras but we need more cameras to meet the needs of the growing excitement of the news! I would like the iPods to use for a field recording tool to capture field notes, interviews, environmental sounds and audio data. Also, for simple transfer or back up mechanisms, particularly for large multimedia fields.

Your help will make it possible for my students who live in a high poverty area to become upstanding citizens and strong public speakers. This news cast has touched the lives of so many students from special education student to straight A students that may be very shy, yet the news has lit a special light in them! Please help us continue this wonderful project and I know it will be as rewarding for you as it has been for me!
