I Can Read About Me

My students need a Canon digital camera and Duracell rechargeable "AA" batteries in order to create easy-to-read books that motivate them using pictures of meaningful everyday items in their lives.

Learning to read instills confidence and creates life-long learners. I teach 60 first grade students how to read. These students come from impoverished environments with parents that simply cannot provide everything. I step in when these children come to school and help them broaden their worlds.

Many pre-made books just are not suitable for my students. They include words and images that these children simply cannot make connections to.

With the addition of a digital camera, and my computer skills, we can create books using pictures of daily events, people in their immediate world, and pictures of the children themselves. We would like 1 Canon Digital Camera and batteries in order to take pictures of the children and their environment. We can then put these pictures into hand-made books through a word processing program, writing simple sentences that the children have ownership in.

You would make it possible for these children to become readers and writers; thus empowering them with a gift far beyond your expectations.
