I am a counselor in a public high school educating students in grades 9-12, totaling approximately 2,200 students of various cultural backgrounds and learning styles.

Some of our students face both academic and social-emotional challenges every day. The idea of bringing Challenge Day to our school was brought to our attention by group of students who saw the program and its impact on the Oprah Winfrey show. This group of students identified concerns of prejudice and the various labels that are placed on students regarding individuals’ culture, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, academic level, etc. As a result, bullying, harassment and gossiping of and by students became of great concern. Teachers, as well as students, realized changes were needed in our school community. Bringing Challenge Day to JP is instrumental in accomplishing our mission. However, it a costly project requiring much fundraising and donations for the materials we need.

We are in need of resources such as tissues, bottled water, ID Tags, pens, an easel, markers, camera and snack items. In an effort to expand character education in our school, JP Stevens High School will be the first school in the Edison Public School System to participate in Challenge Day. The mission of the Challenge Day organization is to “provide youth and their communities with experiential workshops and programs that demonstrate the possibility of love and connection through the celebration of diversity, truth and full expression.”

By supporting this program you will be uniting our students as a community so that each student can feel safe, loved and celebrated.
