Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As I look around my classroom, I see teachers, athletes, servicemen and women. I see our future right before my eyes, and they don't even know it. My 6th graders are from an extremely low income community with more obstacles in their everyday lives than any adult should ever have to suffer through. Starvation, death, abuse, neglect are a normal way of life for my kids. Although I see their future, many of them do not. Reading is a weakness, and because of that, certainly not our favorite subject of the day. My class is reading far below grade level, so we cannot use our reading books. I am struggling to find interesting things for them to read and activities they can understand and yet not seem "babyish".

How old were you when you were in the sixth grade? I have kids who range from 11 to 14 years old in my room! Talk about negative self esteem. The ones who are older feel "dumber" because they are physically bigger and stand out in the crowd. The younger ones feel "weird" because they are so much smaller than the others. It's a difficult age normally, and this is just another variable to confuse them. Of course my job is to teach academics, but to me, it's more important that I teach life skills, and music is one connection that we all have, regardless of our age, our size, or our mental capabilities.

This project would allow my higher functioning kids to interact with the lower functioning kids. My 14 year olds could enjoy time with my 11 year olds. My student who is working 3 grades below grade level can get up and dance in front of his peers, when normally, he wouldn't want to say a word. Of course, school is about learning, but learning what? This is an opportunity for my kids to learn about themselves, and their world. My project consists of a CD player with an AM/FM radio, and a variety of CDs, from solid gold oldies to disco to pop songs.

I have been privileged in the past to have found generous donors, and I am asking once again, for your help. This is a project deep in my heart and I can't do it without you. You could put smiles on my kids' faces every single day. Imagine that.
