Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second grade reading remediation teacher (Title I) at an elementary school in the mountains of north Alabama. The majority of my students come from low-income homes where the only language spoken is Spanish.

For some of my students' families it is difficult to find books that they can read with their children. In some low-income households books are a luxury item that may not be attainable even when Spanish-language books can be found in stores. Our school and local library are building collections of Spanish-language books. These are a wonderful resource. I would like to supplement these libraries with Spanish books in my classroom. In our area the ability to speak, read, and write fluently in English and Spanish is valuable at work and in the community. Our Spanish-speaking students would benefit from developing their Spanish language skills at home as they learn English language skills at school.

I would use Spanish-language books in my classroom as a lending library. Students could borrow books to take home and share with their families. Parents would be able to share stories and information in their own language. The children would learn more about the Spanish language from hearing stories read and seeing the language in print.

When ELL children begin school the goal is to prepare them to learn in English-speaking classrooms as best we can, as quickly as we can. Once these children become adults it is their bilingual skills that help make them such valuable employees and members of our community. By providing Spanish-language materials for home use we can help these students develop their first language skills as they learn their new language. Thank you for your interest in our students and your willingness to support them and our schools.
