Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the proud Extended School Program Coordinator serving about 60 K-8th grade students before and after school and during our summer program at a small charter school in South Florida. Although our space is small, I've been told I have the largest "class" in the school!

We are located in a high poverty area where parents go to work early, get off late, and depend on the quality of our extended day services to help their children succeed academically, socially, and creatively. We offer homework help, tutoring, intervention, study help, and academic enrichment. Many of our students go home late, and sit in front of the television or computer with very little time for good, old-fashioned creativity, relaxation, fun and imagination. I would like to be able to offer a block of time at the end of the day to an "Imagination Station". I would like to stock an old cabinet with simple, timeless, ageless games and activities that foster the lost art of imagination, creativity, teamwork, good sportsmanship, making choices and character building. I also hope that the "Imagination Station" will prove to be so successful that it can be made available to "check out" items to other teachers for use in the classroom during school hours.

The resources we would need to build our "Imagination Station" are simple, old-fashioned items we all grew up with, such as: hands-on building sets, board games, dominoes, large puzzles, dry erase boards and markers for drawing or playing school, coloring books, and word search and crossword puzzle books.

Children have become so accustomed to technology, that creativity is becoming a lost art. Your donation will help the "Imagination Station" come to life, and bring back good, old fashioned creativity!
