November 4, 2008 is sure to go down in history. I am a teacher at a Montessori school in a very high poverty, high Spanish-speaking community. I have a combination classroom of 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade. The students are in various places academically but, when we speak of election day and a new president, they are all on the same page.

Many of my students have parents that were born in a country other than the USA and the big topic in my class, even to those who can barely read or write, is immigration. My students are learning to write letters and how communities (especially the U.S. Postal system) works. One day, the oldest son of a family of immigrants asked me who had to win the election for his family to not be scared anymore. This began a huge discussion in my class about the presidential election, the role of the president and what it means to them and their families. Another student blurted out, "I wish I could write a letter to the president and tell him to let my friend stay." The comment was so innocent yet so heartfelt that I decided he should write a letter to the president and express how he feels and what he would like to see happen in this country. All of my students had an opinion and wanted to write a letter to the president.

My students need the proper resources in order to be successful and informed about the world around them and how the presidential election affects them and their environment. The Our Government Photo Book Set and the Me and My World Photo Book Series about our government and national symbols will assist them in understanding the basic foundation of this nation. The States and Capitals Flip Book, the United States Resource Box and the American Symbols Photo Book Set will instill the children with a sense of knowledge and pride about their country and the ability that they have to participate in the voting process. The Classroom Election Kit will teach and explain the voting process and how every vote counts. With this knowledge, my students will be able to write an eloquent and informed letter to the president and state what it is they desire of him as citizens of the United States of America. While learning how to write letters, the Journal Storage Centers will help the class keep their journals organized and easily accessible.

A donation would greatly assist my students in their journey to understand the world around them and the impact their voice has in it.
