Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach English freshman and sophomores. The school is rural, low income, and low performing. Many students here struggle with reading, entering the 9th grade with a grade level equivalent of 5th grade or less. That's a full 4 years behind where they should be!

One of the fabulous program that our high school uses to support and encourage students to continue reading is Accelerated Reader. Students are tested at the beginning of the year, and are then given "goal" of points to accomplish each quarter of the school year. (A person's points depends on their reading level). The problem is we often have a hard time getting students to take the tests to help themselves, let alone read the books of their choice.

I would like to motivate students further to continue reading and succeeding by having a drawing for something highly prized: An iPOD. I'm hoping a gift of this generosity will inspire students to read, take their quizzes and earn their points for a name into the drawing. Every student who passes a quiz with a 100% will enter their name. The more tests that are taken and passed, the more times their name goes in the box.

Please consider bringing a child into the technological world we all enjoy: Inspire them to read and learn and thereby offer them a chance to win something they covet.
