Kids Don't Hate Reading... They Just Crave Good Literature!

My students need 28 copies of 3 books: "To Be a Slave" by Julius Lester; "Witches" by Roald Dahl; "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" by Eleanor Coerr; and 26 copies of "From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" by E.L. Koningsburg.

I want my students to be life-long readers and read for fun. I know how beneficial and rewarding reading can be in life and this vision of reading is what I would like to ingrain into my students. I am a second year fifth grade teacher in California and my school is mostly made up of Hispanic students. I have learned that my students prioritize video games, talking to friends on cell phones, and logging onto MySpace before their education. I definitely advocate a healthy social life, but I also feel that there are better ways to spend some after school time than spending hours online without supervision.

My goal with this reading project is to create such a love of reading with students that when they are home after school, reading BECOMES one of the fun options they choose from. I want to do this by creating a book club where I introduce good literature into the classroom where we can discuss the stories and do fun activities related to the book. Our school has its own reading curriculum already, but the stories they read are short because the curriculum focuses much on the skills and strategies of reading comprehension. This is good, too, but my intention is to have them fall in love with the excitement and crave the adventures contained in excellent chapter books. I feel this is the motivation they need in order to love reading.

For this project, I need a class set of four chapter books with a variety of levels. I have chosen, Witches, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, To Be a Slave, and From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

With your help and my implementation of this project, we can turn these students from online junkies to book junkies!!! Let's do it!
