Ms. Travers Winand Elementary School
Baltimore, MD Grades PreK-2

I teach in a targeted Title 1 school that serves Pre-K to fifth grade. Our school uses the PBIS program for behavior. PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. This is the 5th year that PBIS has been implemented at our school. Each teacher and staff members of our school have been trained in PBIS. Also, a core group of teachers attended training this past summer. Our school has three rules/expectations. The students are expected to be safe, be respectful, and be responsible. Each area of our school has the rules posted and what each rule looks like in the different areas such as classroom, bathroom, playground, hallway, bus, cafeteria, etc. Students receive "A-Okay" tickets from teachers and staff members for displaying these behaviors. Each classroom has a ticket box and teachers draw winners from the ticket box each day.

The 2008-2009 school has brought some changes to our PBIS program. In addition to the daily classroom drawings, each class sets a goal for the week on Monday. The goal focuses on something the class needs to improve upon from the week before such as better playground behavior or walking safely in the hallway. The class works hard throughout the week to reach this goal. At the end of the week, the students vote for or the teachers nominate a Student of the Week from each class. The Student of the Week is the student who showed the most growth in the goal the class set on Monday. Each student receives a certificate which is displayed in the front lobby all week long as well as a prize. Last year we had one winner per grade level, but this year we are selecting a winner from each class. Since we are selecting a winner from each class, we need more prizes to award to the Student of the Week winners for their "A-Okay" behavior. We just learned that our PBIS funding was cut and we will not have enough funding to purchase prizes for our student of the week winners.

Our students need books and student of the week pencils to recognize their wonderful positive behavior. Each time a student reads his/her book or writes with his/her student of the week pencil, they will feel a sense of accomplishment.

Our students are learning to become safe, respectful, and responsible community members. Your donation of prizes for our PBIS program will show our students that people care about them. It will also encourage them to make a positive choice about their behavior and boast their self esteem. Let our students catch you bring safe, respectful, and responsible.
