Geography Giants

My students need 3 handheld GPS units to participate in planning and executing geocaching events. Using GPS units to geocache will give students hands-on opportunities to experience latitude and longitude. These concepts are abstract and difficult to understand. Understanding of latitude and longitude will help them to understand many concepts about explorers during early US History. In addition using this up-to-date technology will be a tremendous motivation for learning. The geocache events will get these students outside, observing first hand, compass direction, real applications for latitude and longitude, and local plants and animals.

My students are 4th grade students. 40% of them live in poverty. Many of them live in homes where there is not enough money for many extras. Unfortunately it is also true that often when both parents work, parents find it hard to regularly go places and do things with their children.

By fourth grade many of them are beaten down by the school system. Some of them are beginning to think that school is not for them. It is very important to provide these students with intriguing, motivating experiences that will get them interested in learning.

Activities like geocaching are very engaging. The technology is awesome and the links to academics in the classroom are direct. When students have to read the latitude and longitude to find the "cache", they get engaged. They are excited! They will be using and beginning to understand many concepts in math, science and social studies that before, just seemed to be too difficult to "get".

Your help will make it possible for my students to have an amazing experience in the 4th grade, bringing to life many concepts that before "just laid there." I believe that geocaching will motivate students to get excited and engaged in their learning and leave them hungry to learn more.
