Bringing History Alive

My students need 4 copies of 9 selected reading titles in order to complete the literacy component of this new approach to bridging history and language arts.

I am the reading specialist in an urban city school. 98% of our students are on free/ reduced lunch programs. I am trying to motivate our 4th grade population to reach our district's goal of 85% reading on grade level, while motivating them to master the 4th grade state history exam.

Being that we sit in the hub of our nation's beginning, the history textbook looks like something from the local university. Unfortunately for our students, it reads like one too.

The students will select a book, work in literacy circles with the selected novels during language arts block, and then be able to pull the historical pieces from literacy block to their history class.

The historical based text that you will provide for us, will allow history to come alive for our students. Your help will allow our students to not only reach the district's 85% reading on grade level, but our state history exam as well.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
