As a 5th grade teacher teaching in a low-income community, we face numerous challenges and obstacles everyday.

One of the challenges that teachers face in this area is the literacy. Our Language Arts scores this past year faced a depressing decline. Most of our students are English Language Learners, some of which just recently immigrated from another country. Literacy has always been our area of concentration.

The resources that my students will need is a set of new recreational reading books. I took a reading interests survey a few weeks ago and noticed that our school library, nor my own classroom set of library books, were of any interest to my students. Students claimed that the existing literature found at school were simply outdated and in poor condition. The survey yielded results that told me they enjoyed reading scary books by R.L. Stine. Judy Blume was another favorite in my class since the students found her writing "funny" and "hilarious." Students in this area must read, read, and read for them to acquire the English Language. Many of them do not have a solid foundation in their first language, which transcends into difficulty when learning the English Language. As one of my students pointed out earlier this year, his parents simply do not have time to take them to the local library from working double shifts. He was quite honest to tell me that none of the books in my classroom library was of any interest to him. That's when I knew I had to do something about this issue.
